The Story Behind This Biblical Christian Baby Name
Hannah was the mother of the prophet Samuel in the Old Testament. The favorite of two wives, Hannah was barren and unable to bear children for many years, while the other woman had several. This was very difficult in a society where a woman’s worth was measured by her ability to bear children for her husband, and especially sons to inherit and run the family legacy.
So agonizing was this burden of infertility, Hannah’s prayers at the temple appeared to be the mutterings of a drunk woman, and this brought her to the attention of Eli the priest. When she explained her predicament, the priest blessed her, and sure enough — the Lord remembered her request and granted a son. She was so grateful that she dedicated him to the Lord, turning him over to the priest when he was weaned to be raised in the temple serving God. Hannah’s son Samuel became one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament and with the curse of infertility broken, she went on to bear three more sons and two daughters.
